The young masseuse pours oil over her hands.

Lying on his stomach on the massage table, his head set in the face hole, Fred is looking down at the floor where he can see a woman’s tiny sandals.

The girl gently spreads her palms on Fred’s naked back and starts to massage, but shortly afterwards she stops.

“I’m going to try a different kind of massage. I can see you’re stressed. Or rather, no, it’s not stress. You’re upset.”

“You can tell this from your hands?”

“You can tell a lot of things by touch. But people are frightened of being touched. I’m not sure why.”

“Perhaps because they think it’s only a question of pleasure.”

“Well, that’s another reason why people should touch rather than talk.”

Fred remains silent. He stares at the floor. After a while he says, “You don’t enjoy talking?”

“I never have anything to say,” she admits.

“We sometimes forget, but sincerity’s a wonderful thing, isn’t it?”

The masseuse has changed to a different style of massage. She has nothing more to say.

Fred shuts his eyes and relaxes.
